History of Karolines Køkken

Two household teachers started Karolines Køkken in a basement room in the city of Aarhus, Denmark in 1962. In that basement they created a small kitchen where they developed recipes for the Danish people. Their mission was and still is to inspire Danish people to have good dining experiences and simplify the way to it without loss of quality - both for everyday life and parties. Their Danish recipes are easy to follow and balance the time people have available with their desires for good taste and meal experiences. Nowadays they are still operating from Aarhus, but then in a way bigger kitchen where they still develop recipes, come up with new ideas and test products. At NORDIC EXPAT SHOP you can now shop Karonlines Køkken online with quick worldwide delivery!

Who is Karoline?

Karoline is the cow that was shown on Karolines Køkken’s first logo. Karoline became one of the most vibrant icons in the Danish business community. The cow charmed consumers and boosted sales of Danish butter and cheese all over the world and Karoline changed the Danes' eating habits forever. Cream potatoes, cheesecake and tuna mousse were served on the dinner tables. The name Karoline was inspired by an American paid propaganda film, which in 1951 had been produced by Nordisk Film. It was called "The Caroline Factory". The story was about what you can get out of a cow when you run an efficient and modern agriculture with a focus on productivity. The film was one of many to tell Europeans about the blessings of the Marshall Plan and highlight the modern American forms of production.

The Happy Cow aka Den glade Ko

The first logo of Karolines Køkken was a milkmaid with a cow. That cow was called Karoline. The artist Grete Rich from Aarhus made this logo. She was asked by Karolines Køkken to create a logo that can stimulate an advertising campaign for Danish dairy products. This logo became well known very quickly and it got the name: The Happy Cow aka Den Glade Ko. This marketing stunt made Karolines Køkken one of Denmark's most well known brands over the years. In the first instance, the people behind the campaign at the Dairy Office in Aarhus were very enthusiastic about the milkmaid. But then someone pointed out that the girl might look a little Dutch because of the clogs she was wearing. The Netherlands was the main competitor in the European market for dairy products, so the girl was cut out of the logo and so it became a logo only with a cow.
