The founding of Änglamark
Ever since 1991 COOP in Norway, Denmark and Sweden have had their own organic product brands; in Denmark it was brands such as Minirisk, Bluecare and Natura. But to make it easier for the consumer in a jungle of environmental friendly brands, COOP decided to combine all the national environmental friendly brands into one - Änglamark. So in 2005 the Nordic brand Änglamark was founded with the purpose of making it easier for the consumer to choose and connect with an environmental friendly brand. The first products were on the COOP supermarkets shelves in 2006. Today Änglamark (the brand) has grown to include everything from vegetables, cheese, napkins, diapers, grapes, dishwashing soap, crème, sunscreen and many more. In 2021 they had more than 1.200 products in the product line. Änglamark has become a huge success because of the remarkable quality, which again and again wins awards for the quality. But also because of the idea behind the brand – helping the environment.
Where does the name Änglamark come from?
The name Änglamark comes from an early 1970’s song by the famous Swedish singer and composer Evert Taubes. The song was named Änglamark and the song text is about a place on earth, which is wonderful, peaceful and unspoiled, where beautiful flowers grow and everything is lovely. It became a huge hit in Sweden and it is simply a song that is part of the Swedish people's soul today. In Denmark and Norway the song did not become a huge hit as in Sweden – but a hit. Therefore the meaning behind the brand name Änglamark, is the association of a peaceful and unspoiled place on earth and this is what Änglamark wishes to help contribute towards through their environmental approach to everyday products.
Certifications and labeling
With Änglamark, you are guaranteed products that are either organic, allergy friendly and/or environmentally friendly. They make special demands on e.g. production methods, quality, ingredients, responsibility and sustainability, and therefore you can always find one or more labeling and certifications on Änglamark products. All their food products are certified organic by either the Nordic organic certification brand – the red “Ø” or by the European organic certificate. The beauty care products are certified by the Danish “Svane” labeling and or with the Nordic Asthma & Allergy friendly labeling. All products containing some sort of wood are labeled by FSC. All textiles are produced of 100% organic grown cotton and labeled with the Danish “Svan” certificate. In total Änglamark has more than 13 labeling and certifications that certifies the quality, production and the environmental footprint of the brand. Änglamark guarantees organic, allergy or environmentally friendly products, as they set special requirements for e.g. production methods, quality, ingredients, responsibility and sustainability. They always strive to improve their products and have over the years, systematically removed over 12 chemical groups from Änglamark products. Fluorinated substances are e.g. one of the 12 chemical groups that researchers are most concerned about and which can be found in groceries. Fluorinated substances are also suspected of increasing the risk of cancer and weakening of the immune system. Änglamark do not allow any fluorinated substances in their products. Although the individual chemicals not necessarily are harmful themselves, but there is much to suggest that exposure to several substances at the same time can have a harmful effect. It is called the cocktail effect.
