The journey of Cocio

Cocio chocolate milk is one of the Danes most popular drinks. It all started in 1951 in a small kitchen in the city Esbjerg in the south west of Denmark. A man called Anker Pellesen had a mission to create the best chocolate milk in the world. Together with his wife Ella they tried out many different recipes to get the best flavor experience. And one day they got what they were looking for. They ended up with a very simple recipe with just three ingredients: Cacao, milk and sugar. They started producing more of the chocolate milk so they could start selling it in glass bottles. Their little factory started producing 1000 bottles a day, but it became more very quickly. In 1964 their factory was no longer big enough to keep up with the production and demand, so a new factory was opened close by. In 1974 the first can came on the market. Anker Pellesen sold his company to an American company in 1976, but in 1999 it came back on Danish hands again. The production of the beverage stayed in Denmark the whole time. From 1985 they started expanding to other countries and became better known in Sweden and Norway. They were on the right path to conquer the world. In 2001 they produced up to 800.000 cans and bottles a day! In 2021 Cocio celebrated their 70 years anniversary.

How is Cocio made?

As we could read before, we know that the chocolate milk only has three ingredients: milk, cocoa and sugar. But if it is that simple to recreate a Cocio, anyone could make this delicious chocolate milk at home. So of course there is a need for some magic to get to the finished product. Get to know their secret here: they mix the three ingredients and pour it in a glass bottle and put the lit on. Then the bottles are being cooked in a large cooker for roughly 20 minutes. Because of the just right temperature the sugar starts caramelizing to a certain point and that gives the well-known Cocio flavor. After this process the bottles need to settle for exactly five days and then they are finally ready for sale! So it is true that good things come to those who wait… Cocio has been made exactly the same way since they started in 1951.

 A taste for everyone

There are quite a few flavors on the market these days. The classic one comes in many different sizes, glass bottles and cans. And no wonder why it has the name Cocio Classic, this was their first chocolate milk. Cocio One has the same flavor as Classic, but then with only 1% fat and 1% added sugar. This is a good option for those who want to enjoy a glass of chocolate milk, but also think about their calorie intake. And of course there is also an organic version, the same old classic taste but then organic. If you want to try out something different then Cocio Orange is a good choice. This combination of chocolate milk and fresh, sweet orange will blow your mind. Salt and chocolate is always a good mix, that’s why they came up with Cocio Salted Caramel. It became a hit from day one. Cocio Dark is made with 1% extra added cocoa and a real favorite for the dark chocolate lovers. You can buy Cocio online at NORDIC EXPAT SHOP.
