History of Haribo

A German man called Hans Riegel is the man behind Haribo. He founded the brand in December 1920. He was a trained confectioner who started his sweets production in a small kitchen nearby the city Bonn in Germany. The name Haribo comes from HAns RIegel BOnn. His first employee was his wife Gertrud who started working with him in 1921. In 1922 they came on the market with a fruit gummy bear that was given the name “the dancing bear”. We know them now as Haribo Goldbears. The dancing bears looked a bit different than the goldbears nowadays, they were bigger and slimmer. As the business grew, their first investment was made. They bought a car, which was used by Gertrud to deliver orders to the customers. This saved a lot of precious time since she delivered everything by bike before. After a few years they launched licorice products on the market: licorice sticks, licorice wheels and the black bear. These products became a hit and the business took off even more. This success story came to an end when World War II started. The war and shortage of raw materials took a toll on the company. And on top of that Hans Riegel died in 1945 at age 52. His wife Gertrud kept going and managed as much as she could, but it was a real struggle. After World War II their two sons took over the business and that was what the business needed, because Haribo became a success story again just five years after the war.
