History of Läkerol
Läkerol is a Swedish brand that was introduced by Adolf Ahlgren in 1909. Adolf Ahlgren comes from a small city called Gävle in Sweden. He was a accomplished businessman who knew how to make money. He got the idea to produce cough drops when he was attending a German trade fair. He saw that in Germany they were selling cough drops in pharmacies by the weight and that gave him the idea to produce this same kind of cough drops, but then in Sweden. Adolf started selling his product first in Gävle and later in the rest of Sweden. His success came because he did not just sell to everyone. He was very particular to what stores he would sell to and those stores had to sign an agreement that they would not sell Läkerol to other wholesalers or at an unacceptably low price. He was more expensive than his competitors and because of that his brand got a luxury status, which made the brand Läkerol very successful.

These delicious Läkerol pastilles survived two world wars and are still one of the Scandinavians favorite pastilles. And that is because Adolf Ahlgren was a master when it came to marketing. He knew that no product sells itself and that is why he came up with the idea to use celebrities, politicians, royalties, singers and nobel price winners to write a piece about their experience with Läkerol, which he then used for advertising purposes in newspapers. He became acquainted with all these distinguished people during a travel around the world and the funny thing is that he did not pay anyone of them for writing about their experience with Läkerol. In 1932 a few special golden boxes were produced to give away to royalty and scientists, which was of course an excellent way to create publicity again. In the 1960’s the pop culture was rising and to attract this new generation, Läkerol was promoted as the perfect breath freshener before kissing.
