The start of Marabou Chocolate
In the end of the 18th century a Norwegian man called Johan Trone Holst bought an old chocolate factory called Freia in Christiania (nowadays Oslo), Norway. He bought it for only 9000 NOK and renovated it completely to a modern workplace. It did not take long before the factory became one of the leading chocolate producers of the country. In 1916 the company expanded by starting up a daughter company in Sundbyberg just outside Stockholm, Sweden. This daughter company was called Marabou. Around that time chocolate was a luxury product and only the wealthy people were able to buy it. In the late 1930’s chocolate became a bit cheaper, because of the development of machinery like the conveyor belt. From then on the working class could also afford some delicious pieces of chocolate now and then. The son of Johan Trone Holst, called Henning, became director of the new factory in Sweden from 1918 to 1947. In this time they developed products that are still available today, for example Marabou Japp, Marabou Daim and Marabou Twist. Their business kept growing and the third factory was built in the late 1960’s in the city of Väsby, Sweden. This factory is still there today. The company is now part of the group Mondelēz International, which is the world's largest chocolate company. In addition to the Nordic brands Marabou and Freia, you will find chocolate from Milka, Cadbury, Toblerone, Côte d’Or and Suchard from Mondelēz.
