The history of Urtekram

It all began in 1972 with Lisbeth Damsgaard and Ronnie McGrail when they started a small herbalist shop in Copenhagen. It was in the pioneering spirit of the 1970’s, where cohesion and environmental awareness took its roots. At this time in the early 70’s ecology was in its early stages and was an idealistic cause for the few. The visionary founders focused on the natural, simple and pure lifestyle. The entrepreneurial spirit quickly took a hold of the owners and soon after the company Urtekram was established. From then on it grew from its small beginnings. In the 1970’s and 1980’s the knowledge of Urtekram grew slowly within a small group of former Eco-enthusiasts. A development happened in the consumers’ behavior in the early 1990’s and organic products became more and more mainstream. Urtekram was in the forefront of this movement when the supermarket chain COOP decided to add to their assortment. Today Urtekram is sold in almost every supermarket and herbalist store in Scandinvia. But for the founders this was only the beginning of a journey, which would make Denmark and whole of Scandinavia more environmental aware.
