History, Passionate and Back to Basics

Wasa has a long history that dates all the way back to 1919. Karl Edvard Lundström founded Wasa in 1919 and is today the worlds largest and leading manufacture of crispbread and crackers. Back then they were named Skellefteå Spisbröd Fabrik. In 1931 K.E Lundström acquired Filipstad Bakery and moved the factory to Filipstad, where they also still remain today. In the 1950’s they became a Royal Warrant Holder, the choice of the Swedish King. This means that they were allowed to use the coat of arms of the Swedish Royal Family on their packaging. In 1957 they changed the name from Skellefteå Spisbröd to AB Wasa Spisbrödfabrik and again in 1964 the named changed again, this time to Wasabröd AB. The name Wasa comes from the old noble family name Vasa, which family for a period of time reigned over Sweden and Poland. Today they are a part of the Italian consumer goods company Barilla and have been since 1999. They still produce all their crispbread, crackers and bread in their factory in Filipstad in Sweden.

The Philosophy and Mission of Wasa

Since the beginning the many products, such as crispbread, crackers and bread, made by Wasa have been deeply connected to the unique landscapes that are in Sweden and the simple ingredients that nature provides. Their mission is to protect the environment and to show that sustainability and protecting the environment does not equal less quality, quite opposite! Wasa is a genuine Scandinavian crispbread and crackers brand with a strong foundation with focus on sustainable basic ingredients. Their philosophy is simple the fewer ingredients the better. They believes that using natural ingredients gives a better flavor and taste, that is why they keep to the basics; Rye flour, salt, water and yeast. The raw and authentic combination of rustic ingredients embraces Scandinavian nature and helps give the Wasa products, such as crispbread, crackers and bread their characteristic crunch.

Sustainability & Commitment

Wasa are 100% CO2 compensated brand.
